I left work a little early yesterday, partly because my meetings started this morning at 6 am, and i expect to be at work for a full day. I also wanted to go look at Xootrs in Palo Alto, thinking about the remaining days i can drive in the HOV lane before my permit runs out. Would a Xootr work for me? I skyped Christine, who suggested we deal with vacuums instead. We could do both, i replied, and came home. At home, Christine asked why, again. Well, the closer we get to the holidays, the more crowded the store, Jan 1 approaching, etc. She seemed convinced and went to get ready. "Close your eyes," she said, so i did, and when i opened my eyes she was standing in front of me with a scooter sized bundle wrapped for Christmas.
We went ahead and opened them, as she'd gotten one for herself, and we did some Xootr-ing around in the parking lot. It's neat, but not easy for me, although i was probably holding on for dear life. I am curious about how much faster it is than walking: to be determined.

Later in the evening my brother skyped me. Huzzah! He's not been particularly easy to have distance communication with (ever). He's just getting into email messages that are barely text message length. There was around twenty minutes of miming and holding up notes to the screen. Eventually, he found the chat, and then he had someone come in and set up a headset for him. When the sound cut in, i was able to hear him thanking his colleague in Chinese. I do hope that he's able to get it set up with his family computer and develop some habit of skyping with us in the US.
