Last night Christine overcooked the broccoli to a point she found it unappetizing. I was amused, for we still talk about our Rehearsal Dinner Broccoli which was introduced to steam but rushed away before any impact could be made on the tough stems. That rehearsal dinner had been nineteen years ago, and maybe the cooking times for broccoli might have averaged out to "cooked until tender." Laughing about it together, though, didn't salve Christine's wounded cooking ego.

We did not stay up to see if it would clear for the eclipse: i'm glad to hear others enjoyed the sight via twitter and FB status updates and blogged photos of dawn. I hear it was clear enough, locally.

Our wedding was on a full moon solstice, as well. The eastern end of the church had a cross shaped window with a circle in the center, and i remember seeing the moon framed by that window.

We're not doing much to observe the anniversary this year. We both have commitments in the evening, and although we had mixed feelings about it, we're both going to our events. I feel a bit about that decision the same way i feel about the decision to sleep through the eclipse: i recognize that allowing one to be taken out of the rhythm of the usual by these moments is a way to introduce a wonderful type of altered experience, a heightened joy. But i think my needs right now are to practice the rhythm of the "usual," as this past year the "usual" has been without rhythm at all.

Next year we will be able to take the time to have a special observation, i expect and hope. We've made fine dining reservations for our fifth, tenth, and fifteenth anniversary. But for our twentieth? Maybe reservations for dinner and few night's stay at the Ahwahnee in Yosemite? Christine wants to go to Hawaii some time (but i continue to say "but" -- so much near home to see that is special and magical!).
